With a quick and simple recipe for Apple Pie Egg Rolls that are ideal for dipping in whipped cream or caramel sauce, you can transform a savory snack into a dessert favorite.
It’s been a while since we’ve had apple pie egg rolls around here. Since a good ol’ apple pie egg roll dipped in caramel sauce (or whipped cream) is everything I love more than a good ol’ crispy chicken egg roll dipped in sweet and sour sauce!
This most recent creation was inspired by Strawberry Cheesecake Chimichangas, a sweet take on a savory favorite, as well as by traditional egg rolls. The takeaway from this is that edible dough envelopes can be filled with almost any ingredient and deep-fried to create something seriously irresistible.
In this instance, we’re dealing with tart Granny Smith apples, a little sugar, and a lot of cinnamon cooked together until slightly softened. You want to stop cooking the apples while they still have a little bit of bite because this is the same path we take when making homemade applesauce.
Once inside the egg roll wrapper, it’s critical to roll them tightly to ensure the filling stays in place when they quickly dunk into hot oil. To help preserve all the apple goodness, drizzle a little water around the wrappers.
When the golden, crispy rolls are removed from the oil, sprinkle them quickly with powdered sugar before tucking in (or starting to dunk in caramel or whipped cream!) And for more treats inspired by apples, try Apple Pie Panini, Easy Salted Caramel Apple Tart, and Apple Fritter Rings.

Serving Size: 1 serving
Nutritional Information: 1 serving contains 66 kcal of energy, 14 g of carbohydrates, 1 g of protein, 1 mg of cholesterol, 74 mg of sodium, and 6 g of sugar.
Ingredients:
- Peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces, three medium Granny Smith apples
- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
- 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 8 egg roll wrappers
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Whipped cream or caramel sauce, for serving (optional)
Instruction:
- Combine the diced apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
- Add the cornstarch to the apple mixture after combining it with 1/3 cup water in a small bowl. The mixture is stirred, then it is heated to a boil and covered. Cook the mixture for about five minutes, with the heat reduced to a simmer, until the apples have softened slightly.
- The apple mixture should be taken off the heat, the vanilla extract added, and then the mixture should be transferred to a bowl to cool completely.
- Line a baking sheet with paper towels, then fill a small dish with water.
- Place the egg roll wrappers on a dry work surface once the apple mixture has completely cooled, and then use a slotted spoon to portion about 1/4 cup of the apple mixture into the lower third of each wrapper. Fold the edges inward as you roll the egg roll up, starting at the bottom of the wrapper. Egg rolls should be sealed by running your finger around the edges in water.
- A deep-fry thermometer should be fastened to the side of a large, heavy-bottomed stock pot with at least 4 inches of oil added, and the heat should be set to medium-high. Add three to four egg rolls once the oil reaches 360°F and fry them, occasionally turning them, until golden brown. Transfer the egg rolls to the baking sheet after removing them from the oil. The remaining egg rolls should be fried once more, with the oil being heated to 360°F in between batches.
- Serve immediately with whipped cream or caramel sauce for dipping.

Air-Fryer Apple Pie Egg Rolls
You can make these quick apple pie egg rolls whenever you need them, substituting egg roll wrappers for the traditional pie crust as a vessel for the fruit. With the use of an air fryer, food is prepared with a tender, juicy filling and a crunchy, flaky crust. If available, flavorless cream cheese spread may be substituted for plain. —Sheila Suhan, Scottdale, Pennsylvania.

FAQ
How do you make egg rolls stay crispy?
As opposed to using a paper towel or plate to cool your rolls, use a wire rack. No matter if you deep-fried, air-fried, or baked your egg rolls, never let them cool on a plate or towel. Instead, place the egg rolls on a raised cooling rack with a baking sheet underneath it using a pair of tongs.
Why are my homemade egg rolls soggy?
Before using, you must take the time to thoroughly chill your filling in a freezer or refrigerator. Your egg roll wrappers will become soggy and easily rip if it’s warm. Remove excess moisture. Extra moisture should be avoided because soggy filling will result in fragile egg rolls.
What is the secret to apple pie?
The best kept secret for making apple pie, however, is to combine your apples with the remaining ingredients (flour, butter, light and brown sugars, spices), and let it sit overnight. The sugar will cause the apples to release liquid, which is essential for a moist, not soggy, filling.
What is the difference between traditional apple pie and Dutch apple pie?
The top layer is the primary distinction between a traditional apple pie and a Dutch apple pie. Unlike traditional apple pies, which have a pie crust-based top layer, Dutch apple pies have a crumbly topping.
