The Instant Pot is a popular kitchen appliance that can cook food quickly and easily. However, it is important to use the Instant Pot safely to avoid injury. One of the most important safety precautions is to know when it is safe to open the Instant Pot after cooking.
How to Know When It Is Safe to Open Your Instant Pot
The Instant Pot lid is designed to lock into place during the cooking cycle. This prevents the lid from being opened while the pot is under pressure. Once the cooking cycle is complete, the Instant Pot will automatically switch to the “keep warm” setting. The pressure will gradually release over time, and the float valve in the lid will drop down.
When the float valve drops down, it is safe to open the Instant Pot.
Do not attempt to open the Instant Pot lid if the float valve is still up. This could result in serious injury.
How to Open the Instant Pot Lid
To open the Instant Pot lid, simply turn the lid counterclockwise. The lid will unlock and can be lifted off.
Be careful when opening the Instant Pot lid. There may still be some residual pressure in the pot, which could cause hot steam to escape.
Natural Release vs. Quick Release
There are two ways to release the pressure from the Instant Pot: natural release and quick release.
Natural release is the process of allowing the pressure to release gradually over time. This is the safest method of releasing pressure, and it is recommended for most recipes.
Quick release is the process of releasing the pressure quickly by turning the steam release valve to the “venting” position. This method is not as safe as natural release, and it should only be used if the recipe specifically calls for it.
When to Use Natural Release
Natural release is recommended for most recipes. This is because it allows the food to continue cooking gently while the pressure is released. This results in more tender and flavorful food.
When to Use Quick Release
Quick release is only recommended if the recipe specifically calls for it. This method is best used for foods that need to be cooked quickly, such as vegetables or seafood.

Inspecting your Instant Pot before each use
1. Examine the interior of the instant pot base after removing the stainless steel inner pot. You will see the heating element. When utilizing the Instant Pot, make sure the heating element is always clear of any debris and dry. I always make sure my stainless steel inner pot is completely dry after washing it before putting it back in the base unit.
2. Verify that the silicone sealing ring is securely fastened to the lid, is spotless, and has no tears in it.
3. Pulling up the Instant Pot lid gently will release the steam release valve. Make sure it is clean and free of debris. Certain foods, like pasta, oatmeal, and applesauce, can cause foam and froth when cooking, which can clog the steam release valve. Every time you use an Instant Pot, make sure to check the steam release valve. Replace the Instant Pot lid after giving it a thorough cleaning with running water if it is unclean.
4. Make sure the float valve is clear of debris and clean by checking it. Clean it with warm water as needed. To wash it, you can run the lid under running water as needed.
To ensure optimal pressure cooking results, make sure all of your Instant Pot’s components are clean and in functional order. You can learn how to avoid receiving this warning and what to do in the event that you do receive a burn message from my post regarding the Instant Pot burn message.
The TWO most important safety instructions for your Instant Pot
Although there are many safety instructions in the Instant Pot handbook, these two are the most important to keep in mind:
First of all, when the Instant Pot is on, never place your face close to the float or steam release valves. I use a long-handled wooden spoon to toggle the steam release valve so that my hand and arm are away from the valve opening. Any kitchen utensil with a long handle will do. As an alternative, when you’re ready to release the pressure in your Instant Pot, carefully turn the steam release valve to the “venting” position using an oven mitt.
Secondly, wait to open the Instant Pot lid until the steam release valve has released all of the pressure. When the float valve (pin) lowers, you will know that all of the pressure has been released.
The float valve on your Instant Pot may be silver or red, depending on the model you have. When the pot is pressurized, it may rise above the level of the lid or to the level of the lid itself. The silver float valve in my 6-quart LUX typically sits below the level of the lid and rises to the level of the lid when pressure is applied. You will learn how to operate your Instant Pot model.
In the left photo, which displays a pressurized pot, you can see that the float valve is above the lid level of my 8-quart DUO.
If a recipe calls for a natural release, make sure all of the steam and pressure has released by waiting for the natural release time indicated in the recipe and then turning the steam release valve to the “venting” position. Verify that the float valve has descended before opening the Instant Pot lid. Tilt the lid open slowly to prevent hot steam from blowing in your face.
Never try to open your Instant Pot’s lid while it’s under pressure.
