Ingredients: Streusel is typically made with a 1:1:2 ratio of flour, sugar, and butter. Crumble topping, on the other hand, has a higher ratio of sugar to flour, typically 1:1 or 1:1.5. This gives crumble topping a sweeter and more crumbly texture. Texture: Streusel is denser and more chewy than crumble topping.
How to Use Streusel Topping
There are so many uses for streusel. If you keep a jar on hand, either premixed or prebaked, you’ll be able to make so many delicious dishes:
- Sprinkle a spoonful as a topping for ice cream.
- Layer with fresh fruit and yogurt for a fun breakfast parfait.
- Add flavors along with the butter, like vanilla extract or bourbon.
- Top a bowl of oatmeal with whipped cream and a crumble streusel.
- Bake on its own and then crumble on top of a no-bake cheesecake.
- Replace the filling of cinnamon rolls with a fun streusel.
- Add an egg to a crisp streusel and bake it up into quick oatmeal cookies.
- Replace the top crust of your favorite fruit pie with streusel instead.
- Mix streusel with jam and top with whipped cream for the fastest crumble ever.
- Add to the top of your banana bread before baking for a fun extra crunch.

Are streusel and crumb topping the same?
Essentially streusel and crumb topping are the same thing. They are both made with a mixture of flour, butter, and sugar. And both are used to add another layer of flavor and texture to baked goods. However, the amounts of ingredients used are a tad bit different. So technically they are not exactly the same.
Is butter Streusel a crumble topping?
Sometimes a “crisp” topping may also be called a crumble topping. The terms are many times used interchangeably. However, traditionally a crisp topping will also contain oats and sometimes nuts whereas a crumble topping will not. Butter streusel is an easy recipe made from real butter, flour and sugar. Sugar: I like to use organic cane sugar.
What is the difference between Crisp and crumble streusel?
These names tend to be used interchangeably, but if you want to get technical, there is a difference. Crisp streusel includes oats, while crumble streusel does not. It’s pretty easy to remember this because the oats crisp up when baked, giving a little bit of that extra toothsome quality to your treat.
How do you make streusel crumbs?
Putting together the streusel is so easy. Most people prefer to use cold butter, but I find this method works better for me to fully incorporate the butter into the flour fully so you get lots of large crumbs. Mix together the dry ingredients and stir well. Cut up the butter and let it get to about room temperature.
