I’ve been thinking about writing on this subject lately. Yesterday morning I hand wrote a page of notes to gather my thoughts and scriptures on it. Today the Bible verse of the day on my Tecarta Bible app said, “Do IT.”
Deuteronomy 11:13-14 KJV And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, [14] That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. https://tbibl.es/8yb1
That verse is in the Torah Portions I have been listening to and read for this week too.
1 Samuel 7: 5 NKJV And Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.” 6 So they gathered together at Mizpah, drew water, and poured it out before the Lord. And they fasted that day, and said there, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the children of Israel at Mizpah.
I read the commentaries to find out the meaning behind Israel “drawing water and pouring it out before the Lord.” Some say it was “pouring out their heart” some said it was a “type” of the “Water Libation” ceremonies that happened later at the Feast of Tabernacles.
During the 8 day feast, daily the priest on duty poured out the contents of two silver bowls: one held water and the other held wine. This was an act of prayer and an expression of dependence upon God to pour out his blessing of rain upon the earth.
On the last or “great” day of the feast, the water libation rite reached its climax. The priests circled the altar seven times and then poured out the water with great pomp and ceremony. This was Hoshana Rabbah, the great “HOSHIANA,” (which translated is “save now”).
The Torah Portions I’ve been listening to and read for this week is Ekev meaning “Consequence or Because” because of the wording of the 1st verse,
Deuteronomy 7: 12 “And because you listen to these rules and keep and do them, YHWH your Elohim will keep with you the covenant and the steadfast love that he swore to your fathers.
“Because” of obedience, God promises many good things to Israel. God goes on to elaborate, Don’t forget about Me, when you face your enemies, I will be with you. Don’t forget about Me, when your life is really blessed and you become fat and lazy. Don’t think your power or ability is what got you this blessed land.
Then God takes it to another level, Twice God says, Don’t Think In Your Heart It’s because of Your Righteousness that I am driving out the inhabitants of this land and blessing you with it!!! Because you ARE a stubborn and rebellious people.
Then at the end of Deuteronomy’s readings in chapter 11 God gives Israel a lesson in gardening that they need to know about this new land they are about to enter in,
Deuteronomy 11: 10 For the land that you are entering to take possession of it is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and irrigated [h] (Hebrew watered it with your feet) it like a garden of vegetables. 11 But the land that you are going over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water by the rain from heaven, 12 a land that YHWH your Elohim cares for. The eyes of YHWH your Elohim are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
13 “And if you will indeed obey my commandments that I command you today, to love YHWH your Elohim, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14 he will give the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil. 15 And he will give grass in your fields for your livestock, and you shall eat and be full. 16 Take care lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them; 17 then the anger of YHWH will be kindled against you, and he will shut up the heavens, so that there will be no rain, and the land will yield no fruit, and you will perish quickly off the good land that YHWH is giving you.
In Egypt, with the river Nile and water more available, an irrigation system probably wasn’t hard to make but God is saying, that won’t work for you here. If you abide in my ways and don’t forget about Me, I’ll see to it rain comes when it’s needed and NOT Come when it’s not.
So in 1 Samuel 7:5 when Israel and Samuel pour out the water I believe it was a confession of their sin against God and admitting their dependence on God.
Being a little too wise is NOT always a good thing. I have heard that the hardest people to lead to Jesus are the ones with the highest IQ. Israel, over the centuries became wise and made irrigation systems for crops and aqueducts to bring water into the cities and dug cisterns to store water in. Urban development in itself is NOT a bad thing unless it is making you less dependent on God and causing you to forget about God for long periods of time. Or if life gets so good you lose a healthy reverence and Fear of God which is NEVER spoken of badly in scripture.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
At the Feast of Tabernacles, the water that filled the Pool of Siloam wasn’t so much rain water from heaven sent by God. It was “Living Water,” water coming from a flowing stream , actually the Gihon. That is the name of one of the four rivers that flowed from the Garden of Eden.
We have churches all over the world called “Living Waters Church” probably because it’s a reference of the Holy Spirit and something Jesus said at the Feast of Tabernacles on the 8th Great Day of the feast,
John 7:37-39 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Looking to God with eyes of faith means believing ALL the promises of God, not only the ones that have the rewards you want. Some of the rewards are bad ones, but rewards they are just the same. By Faith, you believe those too. God said it, I believe it!!!
In 1 Samuel 7:5 Israel confesses their sin, obedience and faith in God with their mouth and pouring out water, a necessity for survival. Not much later in chapter 8 Israel is begging Samuel to ask God for a king to rule over them and this angers God very much.
In chapters 8, 9 & 10 Saul is chosen by God, is lead by the Holy Spirit of God, Anointed by God and Samuel even tells Saul,
1 Samuel 10:6, 9-11 6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.
9 So it was, when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, that God gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day. 10 When they came there to the hill, there was a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11 And it happened, when all who knew him formerly saw that he indeed prophesied among the prophets, that the people said to one another, “What is this that has come upon the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
So Saul became a “Born Again with God’s Spirit” man by the Spirit of God. If you know anything about the life of Saul, how tormented his later years were and his death you know it didn’t end well for Saul. As I said in Monday’s post, “it’s NOT how you start out in your relationship with God that matters as much as how you finish.”
Jesus said, Matthew 24: 13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
After this Saul goes to war against Israel’s enemies and wins the battle, God is with him. So all this about Saul starting out with the anointing of God and gifts of the Spirit he received, God giving him victory in the battle you might be lead to think that God has had a change of heart, He’s OK with Israel having a king now until one chapter later at Saul’s coronation as king over Israel Samuel tells all of them,
1 Samuel 11:14-19 14 If you fear the Lord and serve Him and obey His voice, and do not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then both you and the king who reigns over you will continue following the Lord your God. 15 However, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you, as it was against your fathers.
16 “Now therefore, stand and see this great thing which the Lord will do before your eyes: 17 Is today not the wheat harvest? I will call to the Lord, and He will send thunder and rain, that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking a king for yourselves.”
18 So Samuel called to the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.
19 And all the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die; for we have added to all our sins the evil of asking a king for ourselves.”
Throughout Israel’s history, they had a zealous priesthood, a tabernacle or temple to worship God in. I’m sure there had to be pious priests and people in the land who really loved and served God with all their heart. But what was a major “root” sin Israel seemed to never forget how to commit that had the consequence of being followed by a multitude of “fruit” sins. They kept Forgetting About God, that God has His Eyes always upon them and us. They got comfortable in their lives and forgot about their dependence on God so from time to time God had to remind them why they needed Him.
God used the thing they made a confession of faith through and what He spoke of being a blessing to them, WATER, “Rain In It’s Season” as a punishment against them, “Is Today NOT Wheat Harvest?”
Wheat harvest time in Israel is a dry time with little or no rain and rightly so for the harvest to be prosperous and not be lost. Just because God has given you what you’ve begged Him for, by NOT taking NO for God’s answer doesn’t mean He’s had a Change of Heart. Sooner or later you’ll probably realize the down side of getting what you wanted.
Jeremiah 2:11-13 Has a nation changed its gods, Which are not gods? But My people have changed their Glory For what does not profit. 12 Be astonished, O heavens, at this, And be horribly afraid; Be very desolate,” says the Lord. 13 “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.
What’s our cisterns today? Health, youth, wealth, a happy peaceful life. God let’s it rain on the just and unjust. It doesn’t mean He is pleased with all of them or any of them. God by nature is GOOD, even when His discipline comes from His Loving Heart with hopes we will “Turn or Return” to Him. It’s so easy to get absorbed in this life and forget about God especially when everything is going right but it isn’t RIGHT to Do. At times, the Greatest Blessing God can give us it the one that drives us to our knees and to Him.
God created Adam and Eve with the intent of having “fellowship” with them and so it is with us. That’s why God went visit them everyday “in the cool of the evening.” Sin will make you hide from God just like they did but the blessings of life can make you forget about God for long periods of time too if you let it. Don’t drink from a cistern when you need “Living Water.” Cisterns are good places for fellowship and to learn about God’s ways and even to worship God as a corporate body of believers.
You don’t want secondhand “Living Water” to drink, think about it. Water someone else has already drank? Get it straight from the source, the Holy Spirit.

Water had a significant meaning to the Israelites that may not be obvious to us who take it for granted. Water was not to be found just anywhere and was therefore extremely valuable. Without it one cannot live. To pour it out, especially while traveling across the vast desert, was to pour out one’s life. When it disappeared into the desert sand it could not be recovered.
Water means life. And when they drew water and poured it out, they were, in effect, declaring their allegiance to God. It was as if they were saying, We have put away Baal and Ashtoreth and have entrusted our lives to You. “Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again” (2 Sam. 14:14 NLT). They were showing their dependence on God. It meant that they had had a complete change of heart.
At the request of Samuel all Israel gathered at Mizpeh where they, “in a great ceremony, drew water from a well and poured it out before the Lord. They also went without food all day and confessed that they had sinned against the Lord. So it was at Mizpah [or Mizpeh] that Samuel became Israel’s judge” (v. 6, NLT).
Verses 2–4 of 1 Samuel, chapter 7 inform us that the Israelites had deserted the Lord. Then they began to turn to the Lord, but not with their whole heart. They had not broken their ties with the gods of their neighbors. Samuel told them “If you’re turning back to the Lord with all your hearts, you must remove your foreign gods and your idols of Ashtoreth. You must give yourselves fully to the Lord and serve only him. Then he will save you from the Philistines” (NCV). After years of halfhearted devotion to God, they complied with Samuel’s instructions. “The Israelites put away their idols of Baal and Ashtoreth, and they served only the Lord” (NCV).
