You may need to replace your manual can opener after several years or when it stops working properly. A safety can opener, which doesn’t leave sharp edges on the can, should be replaced every one to two years.

What we liked: The Beneno manual can opener functions similarly to the OXO can opener, as a traditional hinged can opener. Like the OXO it features soft grip handles that are nonslip even when wet, and a larger knob as well. The tight hinge opens up wide, allowing you to clamp onto the can easily and open the opener to clean it thoroughly.

The Beneno did not open cans as quickly as the OXO did, with more twists of the knob required. But it did have a nifty small magnetic attachment on it, which allowed you to lift the lid out of the can once you’ve opened it up. Though this seems like a minor feature, it means you don’t have to constantly reach for a butter knife to remove the lid if it falls into the can after opening. The lids and edges of the can were relatively smooth as well, with minimal jagged or wavy areas.

What we didn’t like: After multiple washings, we noticed the start of a very small rust spot inside the hinge.

Fixed Openers Were More Dangerous

We tested a couple of fixed can openers, which are basically a blade attached to a piece of metal and a hook. You use the hook to leverage the blade to pierce the lid of the can and then manually move the fixed can opener around the edge of the lid, using a series of piercings to remove the can. Though fixed openers have their fan base as theyre simple to use and don’t have any moving parts that can break (and are good for, say, camping), they are slower and more difficult to use, creating a sharp and jagged lid thats dangerous.

FAQ

How long do tin openers last?

If you take care of a can opener properly, a can opener can last for many years. Not drying it after washing and cleaning it in the dishwasher will shorten its lifespan.

What to do when can opener isn t working?

When this happens, simply place the can opener on top of the can and gently lift the bottom end for a few seconds while pressing the start button. This will make it easier for the blade and gear to grab the can. Watch as it cuts entirely along the side of the can without touching it.

Do can openers get dull?

For one thing, we’ve found that most can openers just aren’t built to last. Their blades dull, the tension on their arms loosens over time, handle grips fall off, or gears rust. We wish it were otherwise, but unfortunately, many can openers are made cheaply, and longevity isn’t necessarily a priority for manufacturers.

What is the proper maintenance of can opener?

After each use, thoroughly wash your can opener with hot water and dish soap. Dry as thoroughly as you can with a towel to prevent rust. Let it sit with the handles open so the wheels can air-dry completely before putting it back in the drawer.
