Last Christmas my mother-in-law gave me a Perfectea Tea Maker Gift Set and I am the biggest fan. My pet peeve with tea is when you steep it for too long, it gets bitter and not drinkable, which often happens with tea bags or tea pots. Another problem is never knowing the right temperature to brew your tea. Also when you make a cup of tea, you boil your water then wait for your drink to cool down. More often than not it takes so long for my drink to cool down that I completely forget that I was drinking it until it gets cold.
Finally, the best thing to have happened to tea since we figured out how to boil leaves: the Teavana Perfectea Tea Maker. I promise you I am not exaggerating when I say this is the coolest tea gadget ever. First, you add sugar and tea, then you add water. Then you brew your tea for however long is required according to the tea youre drinking. When your timer is done, simply set the Perfectea Tea Maker on top of your empty cup and the tea dispenses into your cup, perfectly sweetened and flavored. That is my cup of tea. Now Im going to sit down with S. by Doug Dorst and J.J. Abrams and enjoy. 🙂
My favorite tea to brew when Im settling in with a good book is Teavanas Winterberry tea. Its a green tea base with strawberry and citrus fruit mixed into the leaves. What I like about the flavor is it is sweet and fruity without being overly floral and doesnt taste like perfume. Also with all of the fruit bits in there youre getting vitamins that you dont usually get from just tea leaves.
In order to make a perfect cup of tea, my first requirement is an electric kettle. My first kettle was the simple push the button and it will turn off when its boiling, but a lot of teas are damaged by boiling water, so the same Christmas I also received a temperature sensitive hot water kettle. We have the Cuisinart Perfectemp Cordless Kettle and even though all my numbers are worn off, I still love it. The kettle has 6 different temperature settings so you know exactly the right temperature for you tea.
I like sweet drinks, so when I brew my cup of Winterberry tea I use two teaspoons of Teavanas Rock sugar. I cannot tell you how much I love this sugar. I sometimes eat pieces of it by itself. Plus the jar is gorgeous and can be reused for refills if you buy the sugar separately or use it for other things in your pantry. We currently have one for rock sugar and we use our old jar for raw sugar. I think it would be absolutely gorgeous with a succulent garden built in one, but it takes probably about 6-9 months to get through one jar of sugar so well see if that happens anytime soon.
I have all sorts of pots and like them all! I use my large cast iron pot when I am making a LOT of tea and want it to stay hot for a really long time, mostly when I have a tea that I want to sip on over the course of several hours. Mine came from Teavana but mostly because I loved the shape and design. I found it two other places and they were both charging more than Teavana.
Honestly, I think iron pots are highly overrated. They’re pretty to look at and they’d make a good self defense weapon, but I’d never want to make tea in one. I’d recommend investing in a good porcelain/ceramic tea set instead. Cheaper by alot, you can still brew any tea you might desire, and spend the money you saved on more tea. Lol! Granted it might not necessarily hold heat as well as a cast iron pot, but you can either make/buy a cozy for it or get a pot warmer for it if you don’t/can’t drink a whole pot at once.
There is something to be said about a ceramic teapot, which is cheaper and you don’t have to worry about rust. Mine was $7 at Ross and it’s been great! That being said, I love my cast iron teapots and have had them for a long time. So much of what we enjoy about tea comes from the experience, so if you know that’s what she wants, then I suggest EnjoyingTea.com – it’s incredibly less than Teavana and much more reliable than the Amazon set we were given as a wedding present.
Cast iron tea cups do get extremely hot. But there really isn’t any need to touch them except for when you drink it. I find it works perfect with a cast iron saucer, grab it by the saucer bring it up to you and Tilt it by the saucer. I have a cast iron teapot set and absolutely love it. Teapot, teacups, trivet and cup saucers. Don’t have a problem. If you don’t have saucers, you pretty much can’t drink tea out of the cups. So I recommend saucers.
Stay away from cast iron tea cups they sell at Teavana. A friend bought a set and they became too hot to hold when filled with hot tea. We had to wait more than 15 minutes for the iron cups to cool and the tea also cooled to a point of being lukewarm. Use ceramic, porcelain, or glass.
