The screw holding the battery compartment shut is so tiny and so tight I cannot open it, despite trying very small screwdriver and smallest allen key. They are all too big!
@deirdremoylan without actually seeing it or knowing the size of it I would recommend a really good tool kit something like this Mako Driver Kit – 64 Precision Bits or even this one Manta Driver Kit – 112 Bit Driver Kit With those kits you will always have the right tool for any repair.
I have a small screw driver to fit this screw, still does need t open it. Looks like new scales, but not Salter. Rubbish!

Insert new batteries into the compartment, orienting them correctly. Match the positive side of each battery with the positive symbol on the compartment and the negative side to the negative symbol.
When the batteries on your Salter food scale run low, the screen will display a “LOW BATTERY” message. To keep your Salter food scale running smoothly, replace all of the batteries every time the batteries are low. If you will not be using the scale for an extended period, remove the batteries from the compartment and store them elsewhere. This will prevent corrosion from developing inside the battery compartment.
Open the compartment. Insert a fingernail in the depression in the compartments edge and pull up, or simply slide the compartment forward, depending on your Salter food scale model.
Different Salter scale models take different batteries. Read your instruction manual for information on battery type. You can also remove the old battery and take it with you when you purchase a replacement. ×
