The FDA announced on April 25, 2023, that Ellenos issued a recall for its Vanilla Bean Greek Yogurt because the product contains egg that was not specified in its labeling or packaging. This yogurt comes in 4-ounce cups sold at Costco as part of a variety 12-pack. The company initiated the recall after discovering that some of the cups labeled Vanilla Bean were accidentally filled with Lemon Curd flavored Greek yogurt, which contains egg as one of its primary ingredients.
Egg allergies can be quite severe, causing life-threatening allergic reactions, which is why the FDA requires that any food product containing egg declare it on the label. Anyone with an egg allergy should not consume the Ellenos Vanilla Bean yogurt from lot No. 073, sold at the Costco warehouses in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington. The affected Vanilla Bean cups come in plastic with a blue foil top and have a best-by date of 4/23/2023 and the UPC 8 57290 00620 1.
The CEO of Ellenos, John Tucker, explains, “We learned today of the mislabeling and immediately contacted the FDA, our distributors, and retail partners of the mislabel and to notify of an immediate recall of 4-ounce Vanilla Bean sold as part of a Variety Pack. We take the health and safety of our consumers incredibly seriously and wanted to remove mislabeled product from the market as soon as possible.” If you or anyone else you know have questions about this recall, you can call 206-535-7562 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday.
For any customers who have an egg allergy or sensitivity and have purchased this product, they should discard the Vanilla Bean flavor or return it to Costco for a refund. Ellenos specified that the Marionberry flavor, which is sold as part of the variety pack, is also not affected and that no other yogurt flavors are at risk from this recall.
