That’s a good question since Colour Off™ can be used to remove so many kinds of color. If you are removing all of the color in the hair and it’s longer than 4 inches then you’re going to need more than one kit. Regardless of hair length, we recommend applying Colour Off™ at least ½” off the scalp and almost to the ends, leaving about ¼” to ½” of the ends without the color remover. The reason to not apply to the scalp directly is simply that this area will decolorize faster because of the heat of the head and in some cases become brighter than the main part of the hair. Leaving the ends out helps to minimize any potential damage to this sensitive area. To balance out the full-color removal, apply to the mid-lengths of the hair and allow to process for 15 minutes and then apply to the scalp and ends. Process until the desired amount of color is removed.
If you have color growing out only apply directly to the areas with the color. Don’t put it on any other areas because they’re not needed. Separate sections with clear plastic wrap to help avoid overlapping or transfer of Colour Off™ to other areas of the hair you don’t need to be removed.

Regardless of the type of hair color you’ve used, trying to get rid of it can be a problem. Depending on the specific type of color like a temporary, semi, demi or permanent hair color, there have been few options in the past. Most color removers are made from persulfates and ammonia which is like a regular bleach. Some are made from sodium hydrosulfite which claim to be less damaging. Whichever you use, the end result is usually the same: the color is hardly moved or shifted off tone. Worse yet the hair is left feeling damaged and abused.
Permanent color will return the hair to its level of lightening which the permanent hair color lifted it to. It won’t return the hair to the natural hair color but to whatever level it was lightened. In most cases the pigment will be removed to expose a reddish to orange decolorizing of the natural hair color. A cool based color can then be added to restore the color to its natural level or a more fashion color can be applied using the lifted pigment as a base for formulation.

FAQ
Is there a color remover that’s not bleach?
Does Colour remover bleach your hair?
What is in color off?
Does color safe bleach lose color?
No loss of color means the item can be safely laundered with Clorox 2®. Color Safe Bleach is also safe for items with spandex, which can never be treated with sodium hypochlorite. This makes Color Safe Bleach a great choice for keeping white items with spandex clean, bright and white.
Can you use bleach to strip out color?
Bleach can also be used to strip out color and leave you with interesting patterns. This technique of removing color with bleach is called reverse-dyeing. Reverse-dyeing produces different results depending on the starting color. In this post I’ll explain what to expect when bleaching the most common colors.
Does bleach change color?
Do not use color-safe bleach. It does not contain any sodium hypochlorite and will not change the color of your fabric. Keep your bleach on the fabric for 20 minutes. This discharges most of the color. Leaving it longer gives you diminishing returns. Leaving it 10 minutes or less will give you darker, less discharged colors.
Does color remover remove bleached hair?
Color Remover only removes hair color that is darker than your natural hair color. This means that it cannot remove bleached hair. If your hair has been bleached blond or your color has been lighter than your natural hair color, your natural pigment has been chemically lightened.
