I have tried others. Heaven knows I have enough blankets to cozy up with but, there is THE ONE!
It was VERY matted as sherpa blankets tend to get. By the way, I have learned some care tips that I will share below.
So, back to the blanket. I needed to either fix it or get rid of it.
Just enough to keep it damp to help the bristle brush get through. Then, using the bristle bush start brushing out the matted sherpa. I found it easy to brush all in one direction, then back brush it in the other direction to really fluff it up. Mine shed a little after brushing.
Steps to Restoring Sherpa Blanket
- Wash the blanket (see tips below), but don’t dry it. Let it partially air dry before starting.
- Lay the blanket out on a flat surface.
- Since this process will take some time, the blanket will dry out. Once it does, spray it with a conditioner/water mixture, in sections.
- Take a pet brush (new one or disinfected one) and brush like your life depends on it.
The edges were the toughest spot for me. They were the most matted down so it seemed to take half of forever. I’m not gonna lie, I did think about giving up but the softness lured me back in. Plus, I didn’t want to spend money on a new one and throw it away honestly.
Unfortunately or fortunately, I blanked out during the process, and am not sure how long it took. Almost like forgetting the pains of childbirth..kidding -kind of. I just did it when I had some time. BUT, I did learn some things along the way.

I watched some videos on Tiktok of people trying all sorts of items to restore theirs so I tested using mostly what I already had.
What I started with:
- Spray bottle (I used a little bottle but next time I would use this continuous spray bottle)
- Water
- Conditioner BTW- this is a great way to use a conditioner you didn’t like, a sample, or hotel toiletries.
- Pet brush
If you don’t have some of the items, the dollar store might be a good option, but I will say you will want a decent pet brush as this is not a project for a poorly made tool.
The idea is to soften the blanket with a mixture of product (conditioner) and water. I used a cheap hair conditioner, to brush it out essentially.
