Making homemade lip balm is one of the best starter DIY projects that I love to make. I am a huge fan of lip balm, and of course, this vanilla-flavored homemade lip balm is one of my favorites to make because it is so easy. It keeps my lips soft no matter the weather, and trust me I struggle in the winter and the summer.
When you step into making your own homemade beauty products, you want to begin with something easy to make. This homemade lip balm really is a great choice since it has minimal ingredients, and is super useful on a regular basis. I love the addition of vanilla since it is a light but pleasant smell that is easy for everyone to enjoy.
Note: This recipe has been updated for a better texture, year-round. My previous recipe worked great in the hot Iowa summers.
Can I use vanilla extract in lip balm? Most extracts are made with alcohol, which is very drying to the skin. I wouldn’t recommend adding regular vanilla extract to flavor this recipe. Use a safe essential oil or a fragrance oil that is made for the skin.
Vanilla Homemade Lip Balm
Supplies Needed:
- 1/4 Cup Grated Beeswax
- 1/2 cup Coconut Oil
- 1 Tbsp Vanilla Extract (or you can use a flavoring oil, but start with about 10 drops and increase to your desired strength)
- Clear lip balm container
- Double Boiler
While I have a link above for clear plastic lip balm containers, you can also look in the travel section of many department stores for empty containers that would work appropriately. They are fairly inexpensive when you purchase in bulk on Amazon (under $10 for 25 containers) and make a great choice to have on hand if you are making this to give as gifts.
Directions:
You can use a traditional double boiler, or use a regular saucepan and a heat-safe bowl that will sit on top of the pan easily for melting these items. Some prefer to do this in the microwave. I like watching the items melt so I dont take any chances of burning them, but a microwave safe bowl in 30-second increments can work as well.
Grate up your bars of beeswax to the equivalent of ½ a cup and pour it into your double boiler or microwave safe bowl. Youll want to watch this carefully stirring as it begins to melt.
Add in your coconut oil and mix it all together, stirring until it melts. Once everything is melted pour in your vanilla extract and give it a quick stir. This simple vanilla homemade lip balm is already coming together in just a few simple steps.
Use a funnel to pour the hot mixture into your containers. Allow them to cool before adding the lid since the liquid is a bit too warm still and could easily burn your fingers.
This vanilla homemade lip balm is a great choice for a fun craft to make and give to friends and family as a gift. Make large batches for the holidays, or to give to teachers at your kids schools. Add a label and drop into a cute bag to make the perfect gift that is low cost, homemade and unique. Store in a cool place so it stays solid since some of the oils will tend to melt easily. This is one item you want to make sure is secure so it doesnt leak out into your bag or purse. This homemade lip balm is a perfect gift!
