Gordon Ramsay has reminded fans of the “secret” to making delicious hash browns for a breakfast.
The renowned chef made the admission in a tutorial uploaded to his YouTube channel back in 2017.
Its part of a recipe for an “all American superhero of a breakfast” featuring hash browns, eggs and bacon – which he uploaded again last week as part of a “guide to bacon” that has over 2 million views already.
He described the dish as “beautiful” and the tutorial details every step of the process of making it.
So what ingredients are needed to make the dish? And what is the recipe itself? Here are the details.
In the tutorial, Gordon uses around nine potatoes and an onion – which make the base of the breakfast.
Youll also need some bacon, eggs, butter and then its mainly just spices and other additional ingredients.
According to the video shared by Gordon, the items that youll need to have at hand should be as follows:
You probably have a few of them at home already but the rest will be available from your local supermarket.
The recipe is for “eggs baked in hash browns with glazed bacon.” Gordon refers to it as “an all American superhero of a breakfast” and it doesnt require much preparation or ingredients.
Firstly, focus on the hash browns. Gordon said: “The secret of a great hash brown are the potatoes. I prefer using really nice, waxy potatoes. They cook better but more importantly they hold themselves together.”
You shouldnt slice the potatoes and instead will need to grate them as itll make them “seriously crispy.” Do the same for the onion which will provide a balanced flavour “running through every shard of potato.”
Place the grated produce into a bowl and then season with salt, pepper, olive oil and cayenne.
The Hells Kitchen star continued: “Give that a really good mix through and then squeeze all that water out. [Thats] really important and the more liquid you remove, the crispier your hash browns will be.”
Next heat up a large pan and add some olive oil – placing the grated mixture into this. Gordon said that its important to have the pan hot before doing so as itll “seal the grated potatoes and onions together.”
Then take a spoon and pat the mixture down. You want it get it “really nice and compact.” Once achieved, add “little flecks of butter” down the back, round the outside of the pan, which will caramelise the onions.
Gordon added: “Heres a great tip for turning your hash browns over quick and easy. Take a plate and place it on top and just flip it over, and then slide it back in very quickly.”
The hash browns will have a “crispy texture” by the time its ready to add the eggs. The potatoes will act as a “bed for the baked eggs,” which should be cracked over the pan “nice and gently.”
Sprinkle a little cayenne to make the eggs spicy and then place the pan into a preheated over for 6 to 8 minutes. Youll then be moving on to the second stage of the recipe; making the glazed bacon itself.
The chef said he loves the “combination of smoky and sweet flavours” that bacon can have which inspired the “classic American twist” featured in the recipe – and its “so easy” to achieve with just a few ingredients.
Start by heating up a pan and adding olive oil, brown sugar, salt, pepper and butter. Add bacon and “as it cooks it becomes irresistably caramelised and golden.” It wont take long for “beautiful” glazed bacon.
Once the eggs and hash browns are ready, take the pan from the oven and use a spatula to remove the hash brown bed. Place onto a plate and then add the glazed bacon on top. And then its time to tuck in!

While a pan is on, he simply heats olive oil, brown sugar, salt, pepper and butter in a pan before adding the bacon. After the bacon begins to sizzle in the pan, Gordon Ramsay explains why this method helps create tastier bacon. He said: “As it cooks, it becomes irresistibly caramelised and golden brown.”
Ask anyone whats the best thing about a full breakfast, and chances are theyll say bacon. Whether it makes an appearance alongside the baked beans and tomatoes iconic of an English-style feast or even the eggs and pancakes typical of an American big breakfast, bacon is a morning mainstay for so many people all over the world. In fact, not even Gordon Ramsay can resist the charms of the salty protein. Inspired by the nations classic sweet-meets-savory breakfast, the chef extraordinaire shares a trick for revamping bacon and adding layers of flavor in the process.
Yet, just when you thought that bacon couldnt get any better, leave it to Gordon Ramsay to make the fatty strips of meat even more delicious with an easy trick.
Once the bacon is caramelized to your liking, Ramsay suggests using it to top his recipe for eggs baked in a skillet of golden hash browns. However, you also serve the strips with a plate of flapjacks or use a few pieces to make the ultimate breakfast sandwich. Then again, you could just save the candied strips for snacking — providing you have any leftovers!
Theres no denying that were a society of bacon lovers, but what exactly makes the porky delight so good? Well, the answer actually lies in chemistry, specifically processes like the Maillard Reaction. As the meat cooks, sugars react with amino acids and cause the bacon to brown and develop more intense flavors and aromas. Showcasing an ideal ratio of fat, salinity, and umami, the ingredient has so much to offer any dish, breakfast or otherwise.
Taking to YouTube, the chef shares that all you need to do is add olive oil, butter, and brown sugar (along with some salt and pepper) to a hot pan and combine, before tossing in the bacon. As strips sizzle away, the sugar creates an almost candied glaze over the smoky pieces of bacon. Alternatively, for an even easier hands-off method, you can even prepare bacon in the oven. Simply lay the fatty strips on an aluminum foil-lined sheet pan and top with the brown sugar mixture, before baking in the oven until your kitchen is fragrant and the carbon has browned.
