Harvard Beets are traditionally served hot as an accompaniment to pork chops, chicken, or steak. Also excellent chilled and served with a salad.
Harvard Beets are a classic American dish thats believed to have origins in Cambridge, Massachusetts due to its deep crimson color, which is also Harvard Universitys officially designated color since 1910. The dish is made with sliced beets that are cooked in a sweet-and-sour sauce.
Ingredients: Sliced Beets, Beet Juice, Sugar, Water, Distilled Vinegar, Thermflo, Salt.
Manufactured in a facility that handles peanuts, eggs, and soy.
At Kitchen Kettle we refer to our jars using three standard sizes:
- Half Pints – 8 ounces in volume
- Pints – 16 ounces in volume
- Quarts – 32 ounces in volume
We are required to label our jars with the actual net weight of the contents, rather than the volume. Youll notice our Half Pint jars will vary between 8 ounces and 10 ounces in net weight; our Pint jars range from 16 ounces to 20 ounces in net weight; and our Quart jars weigh between 32 and 36 ounces.
Why do the net weighs vary? Although we use the same size jar, a jam made with chunks of fruit will weigh more than a jelly thats made with just the juice of a fruit.

Do beets need to be cooked before eating?
Can you eat canned beets hot or cold?
If you’re looking to up your dose of healthy goodness, add beets to your diet. There’s a popular belief that canned beets are best eaten cold, and that heat causes the sugars to burst and can turn the beets into a cloying mess. The truth is that most canned beets are already cooked, and so they taste great either hot or cold.
Are there any health conditions that beets are not good for?
Scientific evidence suggests that beets could be harmful to the kidneys, as they can generate low levels of calcium and cause kidney stones. In addition, due to their fiber content, they can cause discomfort in people with irritable bowel.
Can you eat boiled beets the next day?
You can boil beets then peel and slice them and serve with a little oil and lemon. If you have any leftovers, put them in the refrigerator to add to a salad the next day. Select beets that are firm with smooth skins and are heavy for their size.
How long do beets keep in the fridge?
Trim all but one inch of the greens from the beets as they will draw the moisture from the beetroot. Don’t wash beets before storing them. Beets will keep in the refrigerator for several weeks. Just check them for firmness regularly. Soft beets are a sign of old age and lack of freshness.
