In a plastic bag
If creating a salad bag doesn’t appeal to you, there is still another way to store lettuce, but it requires plastic.
After washing, shake off any extra water, and pat dry the lettuce. Place it inside a Ziploc bag, then press or suction the air out of the container. This will keep your lettuce fresh for 3-4 weeks. Keep in mind that each time you remove some lettuce, you must put it back in the plastic bag and resuck the air out.
Then dry the lettuce with a salad spinner (this is the salad spinner I use) and store it in a plastic bag with a couple of damp paper towels. The paper towels will absorb extra moisture when theres too much and it will also keep the bag humid enough to keep the lettuce crisp.
How do you keep lettuce from turning brown?
When you purchase premade salads in a bag or clamshell container, the lettuce turns brown and unappealing within the first three or even two days of consumption. Why is that?.
Thats because of ethylene gas. Lettuce releases a small amount of ethylene gas, but vegetables release a large amount. Therefore, the lettuce in that bagged salad will brown much more quickly than if it were just a bag of lettuce if it contains chopped vegetables in addition to lettuce.
Don’t store your lettuce in the same container as other chopped veggies to prevent it from turning brown.
