I visited the local market to purchase groceries for the upcoming week, as I knew I would be very busy with work. Needless to say, I needed to stock up on my fridge accordingly. As I was finishing up my shopping, I headed over to the fruit vendor to pick up some bananas and sweet limes for Pastas breakfast and mid-afternoon snack.
While there, I noticed that the vendor had a great selection of ripe guavas, which were in season and being sold at a very reasonable price. I quickly grabbed 1.5 kg of the guavas. I planned to make some homemade guava jelly with no preservatives. Pasta particularly enjoys jelly, as it has a smoother texture since its made from the juice of ripe fruits.
When we lived in Gurgaon, I would ask my friend from Allahabad to bring me a special variety of guava with a pinkish-red core. However, this variety is hard to find in Kolkata, where I currently live. Instead, I used the normal Baruipur er Piara guava to make my first jelly of the season. I like to use ripe guavas for their amazing aroma in my jelly, but the Baruipur er Piara variety is also great. I ended up with a bright red-colored jelly that had no added preservatives or coloring.
Papaya: Papaya has a similar texture and sweetness to guava, and is often used as a substitute in recipes such as smoothies and salsas. Strawberries: Strawberries have a similar sweet and tangy flavor as well, and can be used as a substitute in recipes such as jams, jellies, and fruit salads.

What does guava taste like?
Guava is a tropical fruit that is round to pear-shaped and contains edible seeds. Guava has a unique taste that is both fruity and slightly floral. The taste has been described as a cross between a strawberry and a pear although the type and ripeness of a guava impacts both the flavor and level of sweetness.
