If you have flour tortillas in your cupboard, you don’t just have to use them to make wraps, fajitas or burritos. You can also crisp them up to make delicious tortilla chips or taco shells. It is really easy to do. You can even use brown or whole flour tortillas to make it healthier.

Method for tortilla chips 1. Brush each flour tortilla with a little olive oil on both sides. You can also sprinkle them with a little seasoning if you like. 2. Heat your oven to 200°C. 3. If your tortillas are not soft there can be several reasons: You did not use all purpose flour. You did not use a cast iron pan. Your pan was not hot enough.

When it comes to the physical cooking process, you must be attentive. If you overcook them, the tortillas will become hard, but you also dont want to undercook the dough. As a safety net, you can place your tortillas in tin foil to let them gently continue to cook after youve removed them (via Baking Needs). So, if youre hesitant as to whether they are done or not, pop them in some tin foil instead of possibly overcooking them. There is no hard rule for how long you should cook your tortilla, it varies from recipe to recipe, but we would highly suggest doing a few “test runs” to see what works best for you.

One of the biggest complaints beginners make is that their tortillas arent turning out soft and pliable. Instead, they end up with something difficult to chew and dry. Tortillas seem deceptively simple because of their minimal ingredients, but that means that the methodology becomes all the more important. If you dont make your bread in the right way and use the right tools, you will encounter a few problems.

Tortillas can be used for anything: pizza crusts, taco shells, casseroles, enchiladas, you name it! The tortilla is a beloved kitchen staple, a flatbread made so simply, that anyone with flour, fat, salt, and water could try it. If you grew up in a home that made them fresh, you know how amazing warm tortillas can taste in the morning with your eggs or as a wrap for lunch. And, maybe your family passed down the techniques they used to make the perfect tortillas. For those who didnt though, the tortilla-making process may be a bit trickier.

Ana Frias, the creator of Muy Delish, goes into more detail about what the dough should feel like in your hands before cooking. She is adamant that the dough should not be tacky. If the bread is sticking to your fingers, add a small amount of flour until it stops sticking. She does warn that going too far in the other direction — adding too much flour during this process — will make the tortillas hard. Its about striking the right balance.

FAQ

How do you keep flour tortillas soft?

Stack the tortillas on top of each other and wrap them tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Place the wrapped tortillas in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag. Store the tortillas at room temperature for up to 2 days.

Why are my tortillas dry and crumbly?

When mixing the masa, work it with your hands. If it seems to dry, add a little more water a tablespoon at a time. Too much water, and you will not be able to peel the tortilla from the paper in the press. Too little water and your tortilla will crumble when pressed.

Why are my homemade flour tortillas hard?

The reason your homemade flour tortillas are hard could be because you overwork the dough. When you use an electric mixer to mix the dough, you tend to knead it for longer than necessary. This causes the gluten in the flour to toughen up and makes the dough hard. A better way to mix the dough is to use your hands.

Can eating tortilla help with weight loss?

Tortilla can be a good option for weight loss as long as it contains whole grains. As compared to white flour, it has way less fat and calories. It is also important which foods are in the inside; you must prefer lean meats, such as poultry or fish, and use many vegetables.

Why is my flour tortilla not crispy?

One of the most common issues that you will come across is that your flour tortilla will not have the texture that you are looking for. It might be that the tortilla is too thin and it turns into something more akin to a crisp than a soft, pliable wrap.

Why do tortillas crack when overcooked?

Once overcooked, the tortillas become dry and brittle, cracking easily, the team explains. And a brittle tortilla does not a delicious burrito make. Both the Culinary Team at Tacombi and Vista Hermosa and Laurent Tourondel say that this problem can be easily solved by better managing your heat source.
