Eggnog is an interesting food item. When you ask if someone likes eggnog, the question generally results in one of two extreme reactions: one of love and the other of loathing. We didn’t grow up drinking eggnog in my household. Looking back, my only experience with it was seeing punchbowls filled to the brim in Christmas movies and someone always adding a splash or two of bourbon. And because the idea of making an egg-based drink myself gives me a bit of a pause, I always resort to the trusty store-bought carton.
So of course, this felt like the perfect opportunity for this year’s holiday Taste-Off. That’s right—we’re finding out once and for all which store-bought brand makes the best eggnog. And if you’re not an eggnog enthusiast yourself, don’t worry—there are plenty other uses for its creamy goodness. In fact, I got so inspired that I used the winner as a replacement for milk in our Thanksgiving pumpkin pie. (Rumor has it that it was the best pie I had made in years.)
As discussed in the recent aged eggnog piece, alcohol is nature’s preservative, allowing eggnog to keep indefinitely. Alas, most of these commercial brand nogs aren’t just egg-free, they’re also booze-free.
The Best of the Best Store-Bought Eggnogs
We were surprised by this sleeper hit. The private label Simple Truth Eggnog was my dad’s favorite. It was more nutmeg-heavy in the spice flavor, while also being very thick in texture. Some tasters thought this one had a slightly artificial aftertaste, but not enough to demote it. Overall, a good option.
Kroger Brand Rich and Creamy Eggnog
The Kroger eggnog was branded by our tasters as “cinnamon milk.” Enough said.
This one was too thick in texture and had an artificial whiskey flavor.

How much alcohol is in eggnog?
Eggnog drinkers from the American South are likely used to the flavorful addition, but people who aren’t expecting the strong kick might be a bit taken aback. A solid alcohol-to-eggnog ratio is 1:5 (1 part spirit, 5 parts eggnog). This applies to both store-bought and homemade. eggnog.
How do you mix eggnog with alcohol?
Aim for a ratio of about five-to-one of eggnog to your selected spirit for the best flavor. For each 8-ounce glass, add one shot (1.5 ounces) of alcohol. If you’re mixing up a larger quantity in a pitcher of punch bowl, stir together a one-quart carton of eggnog with about four-and-a-half shots, or a half-gallon carton with about none shots.
What alcohol goes with Eggnog?
When wondering what alcohol to mix with eggnog, you can go beyond the traditional rum. Whiskey and bourbon are also great matches for this subtly spiced sip. Both of these spirits work well with holiday flavors like vanilla and spice, so adding a dram to your mug of eggnog is as natural as pairing peppermint with chocolate.
Is eggnog a liqueur?
Kick up your store-bought eggnog with this popular Irish cream liqueur whose mild flavor is akin to eggnog as is — but with 17 percent booze. It even comes in a variety of flavors ranging from chocolate to apple pie so you can choose your own taste adventure if the classic’s not your top choice.
