While most Cincinnatians have eaten at one of Skyline Chili’s numerous locations, some may not know that the the recipe was formulated during WWII while founder, Greek immigrant Nicholas Lambrinides, was working at the original Empress Chili. In 1949, Lambrinides and his sons opened the first Skyline in Price Hill, which has since closed. However, near and dear to the UC campus is the oldest standing Skyline, which opened in 1966. Now, when I walk by this little piece of the past, I’ll imagine how it might have looked way back when. Food can be historical, too.
Where It All Began
In their hometown of Kastoria, Greece, our founder, Nicholas Lambrinides, grew up watching and learning from his mother as she lovingly prepared their special family recipes. He was astounded by the incomparable fusion of flavors and harbored hopes of someday introducing the world to her delectable creations.
Opportunity knocked when the family moved to America. They settled in the bustling Midwestern town of Cincinnati, Ohio. And when Nicholas opened the doors to his first eatery in 1949, situated atop Price Hill on the West Side of the city, he fulfilled his dream. He was inspired to create Skyline Chili by the skyline of downtown.
